Small is beautiful for 21st century: Jack Ma

CHIEF executives of the world's biggest companies will meet Apec leaders at Suntec today to begin discussions on ways to rebuild the global economy.

But yesterday, Chinese entrepreneur Jack Ma of alibaba.com had a different message for 700 bosses of small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) attending the Apec SME Summit at nearby Raffles City: Small is beautiful.

'In the last century, big was better,' said the China-based e-commerce company's founder. 'But in the 21st century, I believe small is beautiful because it is not about how much equipment you have, it is about how quickly you can change yourself to meet the market.'

Giving a rousing keynote address at the event - regarded as a sideshow to today's Apec CEO Summit - Mr Ma took a poke at larger corporates that suffered beatings ring the financial crisis.

Speaking to a packed ballroom, he said the crisis had been disastrous for many big names in the West. 'All the big companies which we all wanted to be like - today, they have all died. But we SMEs - yes we felt the pain - but we are happier now because we survived.'

Mr Ma, who trained as a high school teacher in Hangzhou, founded the Alibaba Group in 1999 after successfully starting China Pages, widely believed to be the mainland's first dot.com, in 1995.

A popular speaker at global business conferences, he also gave his take on government louts offered to larger companies and financial institutions.

'We have heard so many stories about big companies in trouble... They are the troublemakers, we should not give them so much support, let them die, it is time for them to die,' he said, to loud applause.

Mr Ma added that if governments want strong economies, they should turn their attention to SMEs and give incentives to indivials starting their own businesses.His reason: SME owners may start small, but they dream big: 'We believe we are tomorrow's Google, we believe we are tomorrow's eBay, we believe we are tomorrow's UPS.'

Singapore's Minister of State for Trade and Instry Lee Yi Shyan also called for Apec economies to focus their efforts on helping smaller companies.

'While we might have moved out of the worst of the financial crisis, the foundation of recovery is still fragile and can be weakened if we allow protectionism to creep in,' said Mr Lee.

At a separate event yesterday, Trade and Instry Minister Lim Hng Kiang noted that the Apec CEO Summit's theme of Rebuilding the Global Economy: Crisis and Opportunity was a timely one.

Speaking at the welcome reception for delegates, he said: 'It is also apt that at this critical juncture of the world economy, this year's CEO Summit has a record turnout of Apec leaders since the inception of the CEO Summit in 1996.'

The minister said that as Apec celebrates its 20th birthdaythis year, it is a good opportunity for Apec and the private sector to consider how it can develop and implement initiatives to meet future needs.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Chinese President Hu Jintao will be among the speakers at the Apec CEO Summit today.

Remember thirty four years ago, Martin Luther King said I have a dream----plan is beautiful. Today we have the United States the president Obama is bright and I tell you: small is beautiful. Ten years later small business will be the real leader of the global economy. And I strongly believe that this is what our business focused on. And I again and again told the team: 阿里巴巴 is of small business, by the small business and for the small business. Because we believe small business are the future. Last century because of warm and model all the business you should have large scale, large size, large amount of the resources to be concerned. This world people start to use the indivial, unique and flexible. And I strongly believe that, let us focus on small. Small really makes you been. The next thing is that never ever forget and give up your dreams. I know most people here like me small business will face a lot of challenges and a lot of opportunities. But never ever forget your first day love. That is the beautiful. Do not change if there are nine rabbits on the ground. Do not change yourself. Do not change the rabbits. Catch one rabbit. And I would like to give the suggestion is that when doing business, not think about today, and think about ten years later. Do business you always think about what is going to happen ten years later, five years later instead of the next day. If you think about the next day, you will always be disappointed. And today I still have a dream, I think about ten years later what 阿里巴巴 can do. On our ten years anniversary, I told the twenty thousand employees of 阿里巴巴, we will build a platform that can help ten million Assamese around the world to survive. We want to create a hundred million jobs for the world. We want to make one billion people consume online. This is the dream we have to stick to it. And which is the most important is that big companies must have small dreams and big companies must have the small goals. Small companies must have big dreams and small companies must have long-term goals. So if big companies have big dreams, they can go nowhere. If small companies have small dreams, they can go nowhere. So do the opposite. Big companies have small dreams and small goals you move fast and steady. If small companies have big dreams and long-term goals, you will last long.
And last but the most important, I share with you again is the entrepreneur. Today is very difficult, tomorrow is much more difficult, but the day after tomorrow is beautiful. I remember 14 years ago, when I first came to Hannover, I try torent a small booth to sell the chinese procts to the west and to the Europe ,That’sbeen a long time to looking for the booth, and at that time Hannover was not thatprosperious,but the fair was very successful.
It's difficult to find the booth , finally, we got a small booth,but very few people found us.
Eight years ago, we came back again, We try to help off the boothto move them online , help them to sell on the alibaba , it didn't work, itgoes that time , people think ,the trade fair and online are conflict to each other
Today I come back again ,The reason that I come back again, is tryingto find the important missing part of the Internet business, Internet in thepast 20 years, was pretty successful, but one thing that is very strange that Ifound that very few Internet companies can survive peacefully and healthily for more than 3 years.
That means most of the Internet companies can only have honeydays, honey weeks, they don’t even have honey months,what is the problem? Whereis the missing part? I strongly believe that the missing part is in Europe.Whatis that ?
Whether we like it or not, in the past 20 years, the Internethas larged a hugeimpact to the human lives, everybody believe that Internet has done great things to the work,and also lot of the traditional business hate the Internet, because they destroyed their business.

IT technology and digital technology, is not the technologydifference, is the differences of the way people think, the way people e withthe world .
We don't know the world will look like in 30 years, and we don'tknow what the data will look like , But we are sure that the whole world in next30 years will be changed .
If the first and the second innovation and technology revolutionreleaf all liberatethe human strength, the physical strength, this revolution release a liberate the strength of human brain, the brain in innovation.
The future world, we believe we’ll be connected not by oil, notby other things, but by datas . The future world, the business will be C2B notB2C, C2B is consumer to business not business to consumer . Because we willhave a large amount of data, manufacturer must do customerlized things,otherwise manufacturer will be very difficult
In the future , all the manufacturers, they make machine, themachines can not only proce procts, the machine must talk, the machine mustthink ,the machine will not be driven by oil and by electricity, the machine isgoing to supported by datas.
The future world, the business will no longer focus on the size,business will no longer focus on standardization and power, they will focus on theflexibility, nimbleness(agility), personalized and user friendly.
And I also strongly believe the future world, we are going tohave a lot of women leaders ,Because in the future people will not only focuson muscle strength, and they focus on wisdom, they focus on careless andresponsibility.
And I think Internet must find the missing part,This missingpart is how the clickerand motors can work together ,and how we can make sure in the next 30years the mouse and cementcan work together ,find a way to make the Internet economy and the real economyto combine , the Internet company mill survive happily for next 30 years.
If that income ,that is what we called D-economy,is not just thedigital economy, which I called data economy,and everthing is going to bechanged.
And I also believe that the world will become very beautiful,but also very challenging.
Apple may not be the future,but Apple tells us what the futurewill look like ,that is something in the machine is moving, that is data.
We are ata great time of innovation, inspiration, invention and creativity,andI think everyone is working hard, try to realize their dreams. All right , thank you , good morning !
I was there listening to the wondful speakers all they tell all the things , they talked about reminds me in the past 18 years , 18 years ago in my apartment , I told the 18 fouders , that one day we will build our site , this site would be the top ten sites of the world .
And we will build up a company then can last a hundred and two years . and people say why 102 years ? because our company was born in 1999 . last year we had one year , this century will finish 100 years , and next century we have one year ,102 means cross three centuries , when every goal you give to your team , shoud be very accurate , if you say ah this company going to last 100 years , nobody take it a seriously ,becanse every company say we want a last 100 years ,so number you give the team shoud be very accurate .
We took the video when I talked to 18 founders ，and today ， when I watch the video ，a lot of people say well , since we don`t have anything to do when you see 102 years , a big 10 sites that should do it .
Very few people believe that we will make it happen , because we don`t have a high resumes（履历） , right I graate from Hangzhou Teachers College , and most of my colleagues(同事) and 18 fighters they were my students my friends ,that none of them are very successful , amount 18 people there are only three people who know something about computer , the rest of 15 people know nothing about computer , nothing about internet , we had no money , 18 people gather fifty thousand dollars , and we had a no relationship , none of us from rich family or powerful family , we no government office backgroud , we don`t have a great talents(才能天赋) , so I told the team , that guys if we can be successful 80% of the young people in the world can be successful ,
Becanse at that time , china had the note the internet was so backward , nobody believed ecommerce（电子商务） in china , nobody believed internet , people say china would not develop internet and china will not have become , because you don`t have a credit（信用） card system , you don`t have logistics（物流）， you don`t have this , you don`t have that , but I think someday china will have , if we start to do it now , if we prepare for 10~15 years , the day than ecommerce in china were booming , so that was the arm that was the thinking at the beginning .
And 30 years ago ,I was considered I mean in my early 30 years , I was considered to be a loser , um , I remember that you know , I apply university for three times , all filled , and I after you know the first day when I finished university of high school , filled in examination for university ,I went apply for a job in a police station , five classmates we went there , four of them accepted , and I was rejected , and one of them , one of the four were accept today is my chief（首领，主要的） staff(职员) , he`s been working in the ah police for 20 years , he`s accident(偶然) placement like when we talk about this , he always say well the day when we apply for the being a policemen , you were rejected , they feel very proud , but they say hey Jack ,you know you don`t have a chance .
And the second the thing I remember very well , you Hangzhou the first of four star hotel in my city was built , my cousin and I waited for two hours in a half in a very hot summer , in order to apply job being a hotel waiter , up to interview , my skull was much better than my cousin , after interview , my cousin was accepted and I was rejected , reason is he was taller and more handsome , 30 years later , today he is still working that hotel in a laundry room , and I changed my life .
And the other thing is that the true , 24 of my friends, we went for apply job in a KFC and 23 accepted , t was the only guy rejected , I don`t know why , but they say you know ,I don`t have it , so I thought maybe the god said you shoud do things youself , because I get used to be rejected .
Even to today , most of the time when we fill and we do not achieve something , I say well get used it , we are the people have to learn we get used to be rejected , wo get used to be the days nobody come to help us ,support us , we should not get used to be successful , when we succeed on something , we always feel very proud and honored and thankful .
Even gin 1999 , Joe and I our civil and vice-chairman and I , we took him to Silicon Valley and asked for Venture Capitalist support , we were rejected by more then 30 venture capitalists , people even didn`t want to listen to a talk , they say hey you 18 guys none of you guys have a high resumes , none of you guys Joe is he graate from Yale(耶鲁) , but the other 18 guys we don`t have any background and the started way of telling me the top 10 websites wanna （want to）, make a count company last 102 years and we`ll be doing ecommerce in china , people say this guys are crazy .
But we started with a 50 000 US dollars , and then I think two years later , Harvard came they want to write a case study , they spend one week write a long the case study and talk to me say , Jack , this is your company , I reaad a case study say no , this is not my , this is not what we want to do , he said ,this is what , this is your company , you just did not realize that , so I say okey , that is my company and the next six years ,they put the case study in many universities in BeiJing to study , that they always put Alibaba and other competitors together , every time , I was invited sitting at the back of the classroom , listen to the people talking about my company , for six years , every time they say Alibaba will die , that competitor will win , and six years later , all the competitors died , we`re still survuving .
The reason we do that not because we`re expert of internet , not because we `re smart , we`re not smart people , but we are very optimistic(乐观的) , we believe in the future , we believe in internet , and we believe that if we don`t succeed , somebody will , and we know that we have to be humble（谦虚） , we have to serve our customers, the investors（投资者） may not like us , if the customers like us , we have the future , right most of the company died , not because they don`thave money , because they have too much miney , and we didn`t have a plan , you know I understand a lot of venture capital say , Jack what is the business , but I said I don`t want a business , a plan , so how can I give you money , if you don`t have business plan , and my answer is how can you giving you business plan of internet e-commerce in 1999 , the only thing is how could using internet to support this to support the customers , and understand the customers , make the customer successful , we know only our customers expect succeed ，we will be successful , so this is how we did it .
And I realy have been very thankful for America , 1995 at Seattle to discover the internet and year 2001 ,2002 and the internet or bubble(泡沫) burst it , I was happen to be Seattle again in my home , in my friend`s home , I watched a wonderful movie called Forrest Gump , I liked the sentence ,it reminds me not oh every time when I have a problem , I could tell myself this is what Forrest Gump said , he said ,life is like a box of chocolate , you never know what you can get , and I find the Forrest Gump made a fortune by catching shrimps(基围虾) not catching whales（鲸鱼) , so helping small business will make me like a Forrest Gump , Forrest Gumpjust to keep on running be simple serve the people , that was the what I learned and also I think the very important after so many years , I learned I keep on telling myself , I want .
Yesterday , I told you and today I want to tell you again , at the enterpreneur(企业家) believe , every day is difficut , today is very difficult , tomorrow ti`s much more difficult , beleeving the day after tomorrow that day is a very beaufiful , but most people die tomorrow evening , if you don`t work hard , you don`t see the sunshine , and people say how could you inspire people when days are so bad , we hired people who very self-motivated(自我激励的) don`t hired people who are very sort of complaining , as a leader you should never complain , if you complained , nobody will follow you , nobody love to follow a leader who complained a lot ，and we have to be optimistic(乐观的) , I`ve been lucky enough to see to meet so many gteat business leaders in the world , I find all of them , thay are very optimistic , I found all of them never complain , and then found all of them want to making sure that their team are better.
18 years later , now from 18 founders , now we got the more then fifty thousand people and from my apartment , we got a lot of campers , today , and we have achieved over five hundred fifty billion (5500亿) US dollars , gmv sales last year , and we also have more then half billion users ,using our services in china alone , and everyday more than 200 million people shopping through a mobile phone on our site , and one thing you believe or not , I just don`t understand , there about more then 60 million people browser our-our –our through(通过，凭借) mobile phone every night , without to buy anything ,
and we also created more then 33 million jobs , this is what we view for china , this is what will you most procts , our goal is , that we`ve got bigger even crazy with yesterday I told you , by year 2036 , we tried to build economy that be the world`s fifth largest economy , for our GME last year we are ranking number 21 22 in the world , in next 20 years , we want to be the fix in the fifth largest economy , we want to support 2 billion consumers , we want to create a hundred million jobs for the world , we want to support 10 million business be profitable on our platform , this is what we want to do .
And by the way there are a lot of stories about us , a lot of books telling about us , we know I never write a book by myself , because I think when I start to buy my own write , my own autobiography(自传) that means I`m getting old , the book I want to write about one day , is about Alibaba 1001 mistakes , we made so many mistakes , and the mistakes that we learned are the best assets(财产) , we have ah we made all customers down the only financing on the HR , on the marketing , and on the competition , we have a lot .
I tell you one story was very interesting , it`s it`s every startup at the beginning where you want to be global , you have the same thing , well we said Alibaba b2b , we want we are helping small business to selling things cross the board , so we think of turn , the where which country has the best acknowleged(公认的) on the internent with a USA , we are helping international trade , international trade you need English , which country has a very good English , USA , and which country has most of the import-export business USA ,so we say hmm that means we should put Alibaba the headquater or a huge office in America , so we decided to build up a huge office in SanFrancisco , when we arrived in a SanFrancisco , we found something wrong , because it is so difficult to hired people who know trade in the Silicon Valley SanFrancisco , so we start of hired people from Miami ,from NewYork , all arriving and to SanFrancisco , after one month two months , we realize something wrong , when we have like a 30 people in our steppers , in Silicon Valley office .
Because those people they know trade , but they don`t know anything about the internet , those people who know about an internet ,they don`t say anything about the trade , and the other thing , frustrated(令人沮丧的) us is that it was a beautiful story at that time , because we say Chna in the daytime , USA is in the evening , USA in the daytime , Chinese are evening ,so people working this time to send email there so next day they can keep continue work , it`s a beautiful story , but don`t a workout , I find out when later we find out that those people who know trade don`t necessary have to know English or at least their English terrible , that`s find people know understand what you are talking about , we don`t need English experts to do import-export , so we`re know something wrong , we say we have to shut down the office , and we told the team the 30 people , say we`re going to shut down , you want to get a cash or you want to get Alibaba share , if you want to get a cash , three thousand dollars , like a two or three thousand dollars each person , if you want to get a share , one cents two cents percent you get options , everybody they give me cash , no shares , they all went home happily with 3000 dollars .
So we have a lot of mistakes , we made a lot of , the colleagues(同事) also made mistakes , we survived obviously , we suffer , we `re not successful , we will say a leap in Alibaba , will never say we`re a successful company , because we will not see success until we survive a hundred and two years , we just have finished 18 years , there another 84 years ago , the next 84 years anything could happen , so we will never say we are succeed , because every time , I thing most people here you know at the same feeling , where you get a feeling of the successful , problem comes .
Right so , I share some of the tips why we survive , first we have to believe in the future , we have to love the jobs we do , we have to love our customers , so if you don`t have the vision for the future peep , it`s diffcult for a team to have a teamwork , do not hired people for you to work , hired people to work for the vision you agree on together , especially young people might advise that if you `re 20 years old , please join a good company , find a good boss to learn how to be how to do business , if you`re 30 years old , try if you want to do something youself , tyr to do something youself , when you have 40 years old , please do something that you are strong at and good at , when you`re 50 years old , please spend time for the young people , giving chance for young people , why you`re still strong when you`re 60 years old , better spend time with the grandchildren on the beaches ， this is generally speaking(一般而言) and this is something that everything you do , you have to love it ,if you don`t like the things you you know , doing you are soaked , I mean you`re live facing trouble .
Second is that try to build a good team , what is a good team mean , the good team does not make you hired excellent of people from Harvard from a Multinational five hot watching five fortune 500 countries or companies , I remember when we raised the five first to five million US dollars , we thing ha now we have money , from 50 thousand dollars to five million dollars , so we should hired great people , we hired close to 10 excellent the vice president`s for a many multinational companies , one of the guys who are the marketing experts vice president of a big company , he gives me a business plan a marketing plan , 12 million US dollars , and I say , hey ,we only have five million dollars , how could you give me a business plan for 12 , you know for next year`s budget to marking 12 million , it`s a Jack , I never make any plan below twenty million dollars , hired the right people not necessary the best people , the best people is always you train them , not there`s no best people in the market , the best people is not for you , it`s always you train yourself , so as I say if you hired the people who are very good not suitable to you , it`s just like you are putting a Boeing 747 engine into a poor tractors , neither of them are happy , the boys that engine not happy , the project is not happy , so find the right people
And the other thing I want to say is that making sure that you focus on the proct and services , your vision designs what kind of people are joining you ,but what kind of people joining you would design the proct and sevices , as the chairman as the CEO at the founder of the company , you have to be sure your customer are happy with the pregnancy , I know nothing about a computer , I hate high technology , because people like me , wher we`re here by the high technology , we are scared , but when we want to get a government support with our government , we are high technology , but when we tell the consumers , you say this is so simple , so I was for the first , two years , I was the proct tester of Alibaba website , because I know , 80% of the people in the world of the business would like me , we just want to have a mp click get what I want , so many of the time , when the engineers designed some wonderful software`s , they feel excited and I would tess it , if I can not use it , just to throw into the rubbish , if I can use it , I believe 80% of people can use it , so this is what I think is important .
