The majority of people would agree that cigarette smoking has caused serious problems. But the tobacco companies insist that they contribute greatly to the world economy by paying taxes to the government and employing hundreds of workers.

Personally, I believe that cigarette proction and consumption threatens to do more harm than good. Firstly, smoking is responsible for many fatal diseases such as lung cancer, heart diseases and so on. According to the survey, tobacco consumers account for about 20% of the world population, and among them, three million people die from smoking-related diseases every year. The fact that the output of tobacco proction is reced from 143.64 billion pounds in 1994 to 142 billion pounds in 1995 also suggests that people have come to realize the negative effects of smoking. Secondly, tobacco consumption is extremely wasteful of money. As is indicatd in the pictures, 200 billion US dollars is lost e to smoking each year. Obviously, the total loss of money around the globe substantially exceeds the gain in the instry.

In conclusion, as the economic development aims at making our life better, we cannot sacrifice our health for short-term financial benefits. If we have to spend more and more money providing medical services for those who suffer from smoking-related illnesses, the notion of promoting economy via tobacco proction is not justifable. It is high time that we fought for the total tobacco ban.

This pie chart gives us an overall picture of the exports of manufacturing instries in Hong Kong in 1996. The first thing we notice is that these are all light instries. They are also what is called "labor-intensive", meaning that they employ large numbers of people.

The clothing instry accounts for the most exports ——32.7 percent, worth HK$ 69.447 million. The electronics instry is in second place with 26 percent of the exports, worth HK$ 55.067 million. Textiles, timepieces, chemicals and jewelry together only account for about 18 percent of the exports, but they proce items worth a total of over HK$ 50 million.

It seems to me that Hong Kong, which has a smalll territory and few natural resources, has made the right choice in developing these instries. They proce mainly export goods, which bring in much-needed foreign currency. At the same time, they provide employment for the maximum number of people.

Aging of Population in China

Many countries will experience aging populations in the next century because of declining birth and mortality rates. China will soon join their ranks. Accoding to statistics, the aging of China's population will approach its peak by the middle of the next century, with the percentage of the people aged beyond 60 making up 27.4 percent of the total. That means one out of every four people will be elderly.

As for the issue of aging, its situation has been growing increasingly severe in spite of the fact most people are still ignorant of the problems it brings about. Firstly, with families becoming smaller and living pace escalating, it is even graver for families to care for aged members adequntely. Among so many factors, compensation system makes the most contribution to the job satisfaction. People in the HR department try every means to improve their compensation system in order to attract the attention of the most suitable and talented candidates for their organization. A high salary will make the job look more challenging, thus triggering the candidates’ desire to apply for the job, and adequate number of days of paid leave will enable potential employees to believe that the recruiter deeply concerns their welfare. As to the employees, they hold the belief that a decent pay indicates their achievements in the job. According to an interview done by the HR specialists, they are more satisfied when they receive better pays and are in higher posts though the job means more stressful. Besides the compensation system, job environment is another attribute that we cannot lose sight of. Equipments of advanced technologies enable staff to have better working environments and higher proctivities, which in turn increase their job satisfaction and improve their company’s profitability and competency in the market. Moreover, lighting is also an issue in job environment. Appropriate lighting can rece job fatigue and stress and also increase the job satisfaction.

The expectation of job satisfaction benefits two parties, namely the recruiters and the employees. Expecting job satisfactions properly facilitates an HR manager to make up the job description of the vacancy. Moreover, appropriate estimation of the job satisfaction helps the superiors to do the performance appraisals of the subordinates more systematically at the end of the year. While for the employees, estimating their job satisfaction fosters the design of their career paths. If the job satisfaction of a job is expected to be low for a staff, he will know the work is no longer suitable for him and thus change a job, which wastes neither his nor his employer’s time.

In a nutshell, though people will never come to the same conclusion on the job satisfaction, as a problematic issue, my opinion is that it should be contributed by the compensation system and working environment and people can benefit from proper expectation of the job satisfaction.

2. JOB PROBLEMS FOR GRADUATES

According to the statistics, only 58% of college graates could find jobs in their specialties. Why do college graates find it increasingly difficult to get a rewarding job?

One reason perhaps is that many colleges and universities fail to adapt their courses to the development of economy. Degree courses offered in these institutions of higher learning are so outdated, irrelevant and impractical that the students themselves find it hard to translate their book knowledge into real job skills. Second, there is an oversupply of graates in certain specialties.

So many of them can not enter the professions for which they are trained. College graates are valuable resources in our country. The problems they encounter in job hunting deserve more attention.

3.My Viewpoint on Unemployment of College Graates

With the policy of expanding recruitment of higher ecation and fierce competition of job-hunting market, the unemployment of college graation is becoming the hot issue of the whole society. The college graates constantly complain being rejected by some promising company in the job-hunting market. Even most jobs provided in the job-hunting declaredly excluded the graates, only welcoming the experienced employers. Even worse, entering for the post graation examination is becoming an approach to escaping the problem of unemployment.

Is that really difficult for college graates to hunt job? In fact, the answer might be “no” . There are three reasons for unemployment of college graates. The first one is the deficiency of practical vocational skills and academic knowledge. The second is the inappropriately evaluation of his own value in job market. The third is the actually fierce competition resulting from the policy of expanding recruitment of higher ecation.
