“狐假虎威”,译为 the tiger behind the fox. One swallow does not make a summer. It is unwise to form a judgment on the basis of a single instance.

You may take a horse to the water, but you can’t make it drink. Good suggestions can be made but people cannot be forced to do what they don’t want to. All asses wag their ears, 意思相当于 sb. who is ignorant pretends to know much.

⑴ 浑水摸鱼:to fish in troubled waters

Barking dogs do not bite.

The best fish swim near bottom.

To kill tow birds with one stone.

To ride the tiger.

A wolf in sheep’s clothing.

To shed crocodile tears.

Paper tiger

All asses wag their ears

If you run after two hares, you will catch neither.

为了更确切地表达原意,可采用加注的方法,掉鳄鱼泪即假慈悲,类似的说法还有“猫哭耗子-假慈悲”, 英文 相当于 sb. pretend to be sad about sth, but they are not really sad at all.。

The old man who is called Lao Sai, A loss many turn out to be a gain. No great loss without some small gain. When the old man on the frontier lost his mare, who could have guessed it was a blessing in disguise.

如 Lion’s den 指 a difficult situation in which you have to face a person or people who are aggressive towards you.

Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.

A filthy mouth can’t utter decent language.

To have a head like a sieve

Be utterly quiet (or: dead silence)

Nothing venture, nothing have.

Fall between two tools

A loss many turn out to be a gain.

A fool’s bolt is soon shot.

Clutch up

Waiting for gains without pains.

In the dog house.

Putting the cart before the horse.

If the shepherds quarrel, the wolf has a winning game.

To rain cats and dogs.

As blind as a bat.

Every dog has his day.

Man is to man a wolf

Bleed like a pig

As mb as an oyster

Birds of a feather flock together (like attracts like)

Fine feathers make fine birds

The gilded Buddha looks better and the well-dressed person looks more decent 的意思。

Dog doesn’t eat dog.

Let the cat out of the bag.

Rats desert a falling house.

Love me, love my dog.

Beard the lion

A drowned rat.

A lion in the way.

A cat on hot bricks (or: An ant on a hot saucepan)

When the cat is away, the mice will play.

Ass in the lion’s skin

To lock the stable door after the horse is stolen.

As strong as a horse

An ant on a hot saucepan,亦可以意译为A cat on hot bricks。 As mb as an oyster,也有诸如 as silent as the grave, as close as wax 等译文。

Fear the wolf in the front and the tiger behind, 外国人完全可以理解其中的意思,指full of fears.

但是如果遇到下句谚语“力大如牛”,英语中却没有 as strong as a cow的说法。 所以英语把“力大如牛”译为 as strong as a horse(力大如马)。 Put the things in the wrong order. Put the cart before the horse.
