相传在很久很久以前，在一个小镇上有两个小混混，成天无所事事，游手好闲。有一天，他们两个看见了镇上王姓大富人家的一只养了多年的大公鸡，哥俩一合计：要是晚上把它偷出来，拿火一烤，多美味呀。
于是他们俩想尽办法去偷那只鸡，但可能是那鸡活得久了，学精了，人还在一米远的地方它就发现了，还昂头扬爪向他们示威。哥俩想尽办法都没偷成，整天在镇上郁闷的逛来逛去。这天哥俩在路过酒楼门口时被什么东西拌倒了，爬起来一看，原来是一醉汉。哥俩看着那醉汉，眉头一展，计上心来，也不找醉汉的麻烦了，快步跑回老窝，倒出二两老酒倒碗里然后取了一把米往里一泡，想着大公鸡吃了米后醉晕晕的样子，心里别提有多美了。
果然，晚上他们把那鸡弄到手了，迫不及待的提着鸡跑到郊外的树林里，匕首把那脖子一砍，放了血拔了毛，内脏都不清理就急不可待地烤了起来，看着慢慢烤熟的鸡，闻着越来越浓的香味，哥俩心里乐滋滋的。可是，空气怎么不对，转过头一看，妈呀，咋那么多人呢，哥俩鸡也顾不上了，埋头冲了出去，老远，老远还听见王大富那撕心裂肺的叫喊声“我的大雄啊”！
那镇上酒楼的厨师当时灵感突发，花大价钱买下了那只鸡，回家悬梁刺股，精心研究了半年后，怀揣醉鸡谱离开了小镇，踏上了去远方大城市的路。从此以后，各酒楼的菜单上就多了醉鸡这道菜，那厨师也成了当时天下皆知的名人。据说，后来微服私访的一个王爷把他带进宫里，成了皇上最喜欢的御厨。至于那两个无意中发明醉鸡的小混混，则背上一个偷鸡的罪名，不知跑去哪了，反正再也没有出现过。
从此，民间就多了一个“偷鸡不成反蚀把米”的谚语。
