齐宣王使人吹竽①，必三百人。南郭处士②请为王吹竽。宣王悦之，廪③食以数百人。宣王死，闵王立。好一一听之，处士逃。
【注释】
①竽：一种乐器的名称，很象现在的笙。
②处士：没有官职的普通知识分子。
③廪：粮食仓库。
【译文】
齐宣王让人吹竽，一定要三百人一起吹。南郭处士请求为齐宣王吹竽，宣王很高兴。官仓供养的乐手有好几百人。齐宣王死后，他的儿子王继位。王也喜欢听吹竽，但他喜欢让他们一个一个地吹，南郭处士只好逃走了。
【作者简介】
韩非（约前280-前233），是韩国的贵族，“喜刑名法术之学”，后世称他为韩非子。他和李斯都是荀子的弟子。当时韩国很弱，常受邻国的欺凌，他多次向韩王提出富强的计策，但未被韩王采纳。韩非写了《孤愤》《五蠹》等一系列文章，这些作品后来集为《韩非子》一书。秦王嬴政读了韩非的文章，极为赞赏。公元前234年，韩非作为韩国的使臣来到秦国，上书秦王，劝其先伐赵而缓伐韩。李斯妒忌韩非的才能，与姚贾一道进谗加以陷害，韩非被迫服毒自杀。
韩非注意研究历史，认为历史是不断发展进步的。他认为如果当今之世还赞美“尧、舜、汤、武之道”“必为新圣笑矣”。因此他主张“不期修古，不法常可”“世异则事异”“事异则备变”（《韩非子 ž 五蠹》），要根据今天的实际来制定政策。他的历史观，为当时地主阶级的改革提供了理论根据。
韩非继承和总结了战国时期法家的思想和实践，提出了君主专制中央集权的理论。他主张“事在四方，要在中央；圣人执要，四方来效”（《韩非子 ž 物权》），国家的大权，要集中在君主（“圣人”）一人手里，君主必须有权有势，才能治理天下，“万乘之主，千乘之君，所以制天下而征诸侯者，以其威势也”（《韩非子 ž 人主》）。为此，君主应该使用各种手段清除世袭的奴隶主贵族，“散其党”“夺其辅”（《韩非子 ž 主道》）；同时，选拔一批经过实践锻炼的封建官吏来取代他们，“宰相必起于州部，猛将必发于卒伍”（《韩非子 ž 显学》）。韩非还主张改革和实行法治，要求“废先王之教”（《韩非子 ž 问田》），“以法为教”（《韩非子 ž 五蠹》）。他强调制定了“法”，就要严格执行，任何人也不能例外，做到“法不阿贵”“刑过不避大臣，赏善不遗匹夫”（《韩非子 ž 有度》）。他还认为只有实行严刑重罚，人民才会顺从，社会才能安定，封建统治才能巩固。韩非的这些主张，反映了新兴封建地主阶级的利益和要求，为结束诸侯割据，建立统一的中央集权的封建国家，提供了理论依据。秦始皇统一中国后采取的许多政治措施，就是韩非理论的应用和发展。
【评点】
不会吹竽的南郭先生混在三百人的乐队中装模作样地凑数，竟然可以得到赏赐，一旦要自己凭真实本领单独演奏时，南郭先生就只好逃之夭夭了。这个寓言比喻没有真才实学的人混在行家里面充数，或是用不好的东西混在好东西里充数。南郭先生也成了滥竽充数者的代名词。
千百年来，滥竽充数这个故事，一直被人们广为传诵。南郭处士的行为骗得了一时，却骗不了一世。强调个人应该勤学苦练，使自己具有真才实学。

Jack: Sounds terrific. But I don’t have any money.

Old man: Sir, since the sun is burning, would you like some ice cream?

Act 3
(The next morning)
Jack: Ah, the sun is shining, the birds are singing, the breeze is whispering, it should be a perfect day. (He looked out of the window) Oh, my God, the magic beans have grown to a huge beanstalk! It’s can be true, it must be my imagination!
Prince: Help, help.
Jack: The voice came from the clouds, how strange! I must go and see what’s going on up there. (He climbed up. Then he saw the prince was stocked in a castle.)
Jack: Hi, what happen to you? How can I help you?
Prince: It’s a long stories, I’ll tell you only if you take one of my leg hair.
(Jack took the prince’s leg hair, and the prince became as small as normal people. The prince opened the door, and welcomed Jack in.)
Prince: Thank you a million for saving my life. How can I ever repay you?
Jack: That’s no big deal. So what’s your story?
Prince: Once open a time, there’s a greedy witch who would even destroy the world only to get my hen and harp.
Jack: Your hen and harp? I don’t see they worth it.
Prince: You don’t understand, the hen can proce many golden eggs, and the harp is made of gold it can sing beautiful melodies. One day, the witch turned me to a giant and flew away with my hen and harp.
Jack: What are you going to do now?
Prince: Of course I’m going to pay my revenge. Are you going to come with me?
Jack: Well, I’ll would like to, but -------
Prince: What?
Jack: My mom always told me “No money, no help.”
Prince: Let’s make a deal—you help me to fight against the witch, and I’ll give you ten thousand golden eggs.
Jack: That’s the deal.
Act 4
(At the witch’s house)

(Jack and Prince ran into the house.)

Mom: (shouting) Oh, my God, oh, my God. Jack, I become a millionaire.

[春秋末期，齐国和楚国都是大国。有一回，齐王派大夫晏子去访问楚国。
楚王 （阴险地）哈哈哈！我们国势强盛，等会儿乘机侮辱晏子，显显我们楚国的威风。晏子身材矮小，你去在城门旁边开一个五尺来高的洞。
接待人员 是！
[晏子来到楚国。
楚王 （急忙吩咐道）把城门关上，让晏子从这个洞进去。
接待人员 （急忙把城门关上，指着洞）晏子，从这边进。
晏子 （看了看，严肃地）这是个狗洞，不是城门。只有访问“狗国”，才从狗洞进去。我在这儿等一会儿，你们先去问个明白，楚国到底是个什么样的国家？
