从《义忠王庙记》来看，李茂诚虽谓“记者，纪也”，言之凿凿，但是记述之中可见虚构成份。他记录了梁山伯的身世、功迹等，加入了梁、祝的对话，情节甚是完整生动，特别是梁山伯具有了“神”的地位，显灵退寇，颇具传奇色彩。同时，李茂诚首次记述了梁山伯的生卒年月。梁山伯生于公元352年农历三月初一，死于373年农历八月十六，终年21岁，未曾婚配。祝英台出嫁在374年暮春，在梁山伯墓前“哀恸地裂而璧埋”，殉情而卒。
在宋代，已有词牌《祝英台近》，苏轼、辛弃疾、吴文英等宋词大家以此词牌填词，可见梁祝故事影响愈深。至元代，刘一清的《钱塘遗事》、钟嗣成《录鬼簿》皆有梁祝记载，杂剧作家白仁甫创作《祝英台死嫁梁山伯》，惜已散佚。

《识小录》中出现了“蝴蝶”的意象，使这个悲剧故事中具有了浪漫意味。同为明代的詹詹外史编述了一部《情史类略》（又名《情天宝鉴》），其中在《祝英台》条目中，作者如是说：“梁山伯、祝英台，皆东晋人。梁家会稽，祝家上虞。”又云：“吴中有花蝴蝶，橘蠹所化。妇孺呼黄色者为梁山伯，黑色者为祝英台。俗传祝死后，其家就梁冢焚衣，衣于火中化成二蝶。盖好事者为之也”。作者对于梁祝化蝶之情节，以理性思维作出了否认。詹詹外史一向被认为是冯梦龙的又一别号，问题是冯梦龙在《李秀卿义结黄贞女》（《三言二拍·喻世明言》）中写到的梁祝故事，明确地演绎了“梁祝化蝶”这个情节，而且梁、祝的籍贯从会稽、上虞变成了苏州、义兴（现宜兴），故而詹詹外史与冯梦龙是否同一人，姑且存疑，其文照录：有个女子，叫做祝英台，常州义兴人氏，自小通书好学，闻余杭文风最盛，欲往游学。其哥嫂止之，曰：“古者男女七岁不同席，不共食，你今一十六岁，却出外游学，男女不分，岂不笑话!”英台道：“奴家自有良策。”乃裹巾束带，扮作男子模样，走到哥嫂面前，哥嫂亦不能辨认。英台临行时，正是夏初天气，榴花盛开，乃手摘一枝，插于花台之上，对天祷告道：“奴家祝英台出外游学，若完名全节，此枝生根长叶，年年花发；若有不肖之事，玷辱门风，此枝枯萎。”祷毕，出门，自称“祝九舍人”。遇个朋友，是个苏州人氏，叫做梁山伯，与他同馆读书，甚相爱重，结为兄弟。日则同食，夜则同卧，如此三年，英台衣不解带，山伯屡次疑惑盘问，都被英台将言语支吾过了。读了三年书，学问成就，相别回家，约梁山伯二个月内，可来见访。英台归，时仍是初夏，那花台上所插榴枝，花叶并茂，哥嫂方信了。同乡三十里外，有个安乐村，那村中有个马氏，大富之家。闻得祝娘贤慧，寻媒与哥哥议亲。哥哥一口许下，纳彩、问名都过了，约定来年二月娶亲。原来英台有心于山伯，要等他来访，时露其机括。谁知山伯有事，稽迟在家。英台只恐哥嫂疑心，不敢推阻。山伯直到十月，方才动身，过了六个月了。到得祝家庄，问祝九舍人。时庄客说道：“本庄只有祝九娘，并没有祝九舍人。”山伯心疑，传了名刺进去，只见丫环出来，请梁兄到中堂相见。山伯走进中堂，那祝英台红妆翠袖，别是一般妆束了。山伯大惊，方知假扮男子，自愧愚鲁，不能辨识。寒温已罢，便谈及婚姻之事。英台将哥嫂做主，已许马氏，为辞。山伯自恨来迟，懊悔不迭。分别，回去，遂成相思之病，奄奄不起，至岁底，身亡。嘱咐父母，可葬我于安乐村路口，父母依言葬之。明年，英台出嫁马家，行至安乐村路口，忽然狂风四起，天昏地暗，舆人都不能行。英台举眼观看，但见梁山伯飘然而来，说道：“吾为思贤妹，一病而亡，今葬于此地。贤妹不忘旧谊，可出轿一顾？”英台果然走出轿来，忽然一声响亮，地下裂开丈余，英台从裂中跳下。众人扯其衣服，如蝉脱一般，其衣片片而飞。顷刻，天清地明。那地裂处，只如一线之细。歇轿处，正是梁山伯坟墓。乃知生为兄弟，死作夫妻。再看那飞的衣服碎片，变成两般花蝴蝶，传说是二人精灵所化，红者为梁山伯，黑者为祝英台。其种到处有之，至今犹呼其名为梁山伯、祝英台也。
在梁祝传说的演变过程中，清道光岁贡邵金彪作的《祝英台小传》（《宜兴荆溪县新志》），把梁祝故事“美化完整了”。引述如下：祝英台，小字九娘，上虞富家女，生无兄弟，才貌双绝。父母欲为择偶，英台曰：“儿当出外游学，得贤士事之耳。”因易男装，改称九官，遇会稽梁山伯亦游学，遂与偕至义兴善权山之碧鲜岩，筑庵读书，同居同宿三年，而梁不知为女子。临别，祝约曰：“某月日可相访。将告父母，以妹妻君。”实则以身相许也。梁自以家贫，羞涩畏行，遂至衍期。父母以英台字马氏子。后梁为鄞令，过祝家询九官。家僮曰：“吾家但有九娘，无九官也。”梁惊悟，以同学之谊乞一见。英台罗扇遮面出，侧身一揖而已。梁悔念成疾卒，遗言葬清道山下。明年，英台将归马氏，命舟子迂道过其处。至则风涛大作，舟遂停泊。英台乃造梁墓前失声恸哭，地忽开裂，坠入墓中，绣裙绮襦化蝶飞去。丞相谢安闻其事，奏于朝庭，请封为义妇。此东晋永和时事也。齐和帝时，梁复显灵异，助战有功，有司为立庙于鄞，合祀梁祝。其读书宅称“碧鲜庵”，齐建元间改为善卷寺。今寺后有石刻，大书“祝英台读书处”。寺前里许，村名祝陵。山中杜鹃花发时，辄有大蝶双飞不散，俗传是两人之精魂。今称大彩蝶尚谓“祝英台”云。
殊为有趣的是，邵金彪此记，把江浙两省所涉及的梁祝传说的“关键词”相互混杂，自相矛盾。邵金彪虽是为宜兴的地方志作《祝英台小传》，然而，其中所记上虞祝英台、会稽梁山伯、梁为鄞令、卒葬清道山、梁山伯庙、合祀梁祝等，皆为浙江的宁波、上虞，而善权山、碧鲜岩、祝英台读书处、祝陵、大彩蝶等，则为江苏的宜兴——江浙两省的梁祝传说、梁祝遗迹、梁祝风物等，邵金彪揉合在了一起，形成此记，留给后人一个迷惑不已的“谜”。然而，梁祝故事在邵金彪笔下确实显得更完整、更生动了。
四十年代初期，以梁祝故事改编新排的《梁祝哀史》是当时越剧表演的经典剧目，称为越剧演员的“看家戏”。
张恨水先生的《梁山伯与祝英台》，基本上以越剧《梁祝》情节来展开，写成小说。言情小说家张恨水在创作《梁山伯与祝英台》时，曾根据民间传说，考证出十个地方流传梁祝故事，涉及到浙江、江苏、山东、甘肃、安徽、河北、山西七省。“……梁祝故事，其间提到会稽上虞的，要占百分之八十。而根据宋代以后文字，都指明了埋葬地在宁波，也当然，梁祝生产地在浙江了。”（张恨水：《关于梁祝文字的来源》）。
