West Point
My father, brother and I visited West Point to see a football game between Army and Boston College. Taking a stroll before kickoff, we met many cadets in neatly pressed uniforms. Several visting fans asked the recruits if they would pose for photographs, "to show our son what to expect if he should attend West Point."
One middle-aged couple approached a very attractive female cadet and asked her to pose for a picture. They explained, "We want to show our son what he missed by not coming to West Point."

The wife wanted to travel around the world. The fairy waved her hand, and Boom! She had the tickets in her hand.
Next, it was the husband‘s turn. He paused for a moment, then said shyly, "Well, I‘d like to have a woman 30 years younger than me."
The fairy picked up her wand, and Boom! He was ninety.

"He‘s a good boy," said Jack‘s father, "and if you let him pass this time, I‘m sure he‘ll improve a lot next year and pass the examinations at the end of it really well."
"No, no, that‘s quite impossible," replied the professor immediately. "Do you know, last month I asked him when Napoleon had died, he didn‘t know!"
"Please, sir, give him another chance," said Jack‘s father. "You see, I‘m afraid we don‘t take any newspaper in our house, so none of us even know that Napoleon was ill."

He Was Only Wrong by Two
Jack Hawkins was the football coach at an Amercian college, and he was always trying to find good players, but they weren‘t always smart enought to be accepted by the college.
One day the coach brought an excellent young player to the dean of the college and asked that the student be allowed to enter without an examination. "Well," the dean said after some persuasion, "I‘d better ask him a few questions first."
Then he turned to the student and asked him some very easy questions, but the student didn‘t know any of the answers.
At last the dean said, "Well, what‘s five times seven?"
The student thought for a long time and then answered, "Thirty-six."
The dean threw up his hands and looked at the coach in despair, but the coach said earnestly, "Oh, please let him in, sir! He was only wrong by two."

When I taught the introction-to-theater course at North Dakota State University, I required my students to attend the university theater‘s current proction and write a critique. After viewing a particularly fine performance, one student wrote: "The play was so real, I thought I was actually sitting on my couch at home, watching it on television."

A Fine Match
One day a lady saw a mouse running across her kitchen floor. She was very afraid of mouse, so she ran out of the house, got into a bus and went to the shops. There she bought a mousetrap. The shopkeeper said to her, "Put some cheese in it and you will soon catch that mouse."
The lady went home with her mousetrap, but when she looked in her cupboard, she could not find any cheese in it. She did not want to go back to the shop, because it was very late, so she cut a picture of some cheese out of a magazine and put that in the trap.
Surprisingly, the picture of the cheese was quite successful! When the lady came down to the kitchen the next morning she found a picture of a mouse in the trap beside the picture of the cheese!

Later that evening I opened my present with enthusiasm. "Happy birthday," he said, as I unwrapped a new pair of gardening gloves.

One of my favorite teachers at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau was known of his droll sense of humor. Explaining his ground rules to one freshman class, he said, "Now I know my lectures can often be dry and boring, so I don‘t mind if you look at your watches ring class. I do, however, object to your pounding them on the desk to make sure they‘re still running."

C. 求英语励志故事
正所谓“无心插柳柳成荫”，目标北大，只考上杭州师院；三年高考，一年数学成绩1分，一年成绩19分。大学毕业后，马云当了6年半的英语老师。期间，他成立了杭州首家外文翻译社，用业余时间接了一些外贸单位的翻译活。马云说，“我当年学英语，我没有想
到后来英文帮了我的大忙。所以，做任何事情只要你喜欢，只要你认为对的，就可以去做。如果你思考问题功利性很强的话，肯定会遇到麻烦的。”

清华：从写26个英文字母开始
“临近退役时，我便开始设计自己将来的路，有人认为运动员只能在自己熟悉的运动项目中继续工作，而我就是要证明：运动员不仅能够打好比赛，同时也能做好其他事情。哪天我不当运动员了，我的新起点也就开始了。”邓亚萍说。
“1996年底，我被萨老提名为国际奥委会运动委员会委员。我明白，这既是国际奥委会的重用和信任，也是一次严峻的挑战。奥委会的办公语言是英语(论坛)和法语。然而，这时我的英语基础几乎是零，法语也是一窍不通。面对如此重要的工作岗位和自己外语水平的反差，我心里急得火上房。”
1996年亚特兰大奥运会结束后，邓亚萍以英语专业本科生的身份初进清华时，她的英文几乎是一张白纸，既没有英文的底子，更别说有口语交流的能力。
“怀着兴奋而又忐忑的心情迈进清华大学。老师想看看我的水平——你写出26个英文字母看看。我费了一阵心思总算写了出来，看着一会儿大写、一会儿小写的字母，我有些不好意思——老师，就这个样子了。但请老师放心，我一定努力！”
“上课时老师的讲述对我而言无异于天书，我只能尽力一字不漏地听着、记着，回到宿舍，再一点点翻字典，一点点硬啃硬记。我给自己制定了学习计划：一切从零开始，坚持三个第一—从课本第一页学起，从第一个字母、第一个单词背起；一天必须保证14个小时的学习时间，每天5点准时起床，读音标、背单词、练听力，直到正式上课；晚上整理讲义，温习功课，直到深夜12点。”由于全身心地投入学习，邓亚萍几乎完全取消了与朋友的聚会及无关紧要的社会活动，就连给父母打电话的次数也大大减少。为了提高自己的听力和会话能力，她除了定期光顾语音室，还买来多功能复读机。由于总是一边听磁带，一边跟着读。同学们总是跟她开玩笑：“亚萍，你成天读个不停，当心嘴唇磨出茧子呀！”“但我相信：没有超人的付出，就不会有超人的成绩。这也是我多年闯荡赛场的切身体验。”
学习是紧张的，每天的课程都排得满满的。除学习之外，邓亚萍每周还要三次往返几十里路到国家队训练基地进行训练，疲劳程度可想而知。
“每天清晨起床时，我都会发现枕头上有许多头发，梳头的时候也会有不少头发脱落下来。对此我并不太在意，倒是教练和队友见到我十分惊讶：‘小邓，你怎么了？’我说：‘没什么，可能是学习的用脑和打球的用脑不一样吧。’”
“虽然都是一个‘苦’字，但此时的我却有不一样的感受：以前当运动员，训练累得实在动不了，只要一听到加油声，一咬牙，挺过来了；遇到了难题、关坎，教练一点拨，通了；比赛遇到困难，观众一阵吼声，劲头上来了，转危为安。但读书呢，常常要一个人孤零零面壁苦思，那种清苦、孤独是另一种折磨，没意志、没恒心是坚持不下去的。”
为了更快地掌握英语，几位英语老师建议邓亚萍到国外去学习一段时间，在他们的热心帮助下，经清华大学和国家体育总局批准，1998年初，刚在清华读了几个月的邓亚萍作为交换生被送到英国剑桥大学突击英语。
剑桥：每天凌晨5点起床攻读
1998年2月26日邓亚萍怀着复杂的心情，飞向剑桥。对她来说，这自然是非常难得的机会，但却又是一个艰难的起步。
“第二天就是开学上课的日子，全班一共9个同学，教室不大，9张课桌椅向着黑板，摆成半圆形。老师先让大家做自我介绍。接下来给每人发了两张讲义就开始讲课，课堂上没什么纪律，讲解方式也很随意，老师一边讲课，同学们一边七嘴八舌地抢着回答问题。我在云山雾罩中上完了课。四五个星期过去了，每天十五、六个小时的付出，但收效并不大，英语水平的提高也不显著。作为一个插班生要赶上其他同学困难太大。加上没有教材，每次上课才能拿到老师发的讲义，这种教学方法也很难让我适应。”
“生活的环境也不尽如人意。到英国留学的留学生，多数都是住在学校所安排的英国人家里，我也不例外。本想住在英国人家里，一来可以更多地了解英国的风俗民情，二来可以有更多的英语会话机会。但是我所居住的这个女房东家，距学校太远，而且房费伙食费很高，每月除了要交200多英镑房租，还要交 100多英镑饭费，两项合起来每月的支出约合人民币将近5000元。对于自费到英国上学的我来说，惜金和惜时同样重要。”
“记得当我头一次穿着防雨运动衣，骑着自行车到学校时，许多同学见了都大为不解：怎么世界冠军还骑自行车来上学？是啊，世界冠军也是凡人，我的所有，是我用汗水换来的，它来之不易，我必须十分珍惜它。学习和生活上的困难困扰着我，我急切盼望能改变这种状况。”
“刚到英国不久，我想往家寄点钱，然而到邮局拿了单子，却不知如何填写，邮局的人在单子上指指点点，我却一脸茫然，我站在邮局前，两眼发呆，我能怎么办？问谁去？问了，自己还是听不懂，最后，只好悻悻而归。”
“开学前，为了让我熟悉一下环境，房东开车送我去学校转了一圈。第二天人家不送了，我虽然买了辆自行车，却找不到上学的路了，七拐八拐，赶到学校已经上课了。一向守时的我成了迟到生。我急得迸出几个单词解释，然而解释不明白，那滋味，那窘迫，现在都忘不了！”
邓亚萍就读的纽汉姆学院是隶属剑桥大学的一所小学院，类似于国内的语言进修学院。这里的学生主要以外国留学生为主，而邓亚萍是唯一来自中国内地的留学生。
“刚到剑桥的那段时间，我虽然比较刻苦，效果却不明显。我知道，这是因为自己的语言基础还相当薄弱，要想在剑桥这个精英云集的学府里站得住、学得好，更需要全力以赴地去拼搏。做学问与体育训练一样，没有任何捷径可寻，更不会有天上掉馅饼的美事儿，一切靠自己去拼去搏吧。”为了赶功课，邓亚萍起早贪黑，每天只睡几小时。
“开始的一两个月之内，根本听不懂老师在上面讲什么，我把老师所有写在黑板上的东西照抄一遍。回到家里以后，自己再翻字典，再看。每天的生活比较单调，上课时间是四个半小时。下了课还有很多作业，吃饭对我来说好像都很费事，中午休息的时间只有一个小时，我一般都不回宿舍，就是吃上午带去的三明治，然后看一会儿书。晚上经常吃的东西就是自己做的方便面条加青菜、西红柿和鸡蛋。几乎每天都要学习到12点才能睡觉。”
虽然基础比其他同学差，她总是不甘心，想超过别人。这种好胜的心理后来才慢慢开始转变：“毕竟基础不同，从运动员到学生是一个非常大的转折，学习上升也要有个过程。”
回到清华，邓亚萍的毕业论文题目是《国球的历史及发展》。从开题报告、到第一次提交论文、以至论文的最终修订，邓亚萍不仅每一项都达到标准，而且步步提前，赶在时间表前完成。
“我终于戴上了学士帽，在毕业典礼上，我用流利的英语向老师致词。”

1、the wind and the sun
One day the wind said to the sun, “Look at that man walking along the road. I can get his cloak off more quickly than you can.”
“We will see about that,” said the sun. “I will let you try first.”
So the wind tried to make the man take off his cloak. He blew and blew, but the man only pulled his cloak more closely around himself.
“I give up,” said the wind at last. “I cannot get his cloak off.” Then the sun tried. He shone as hard as he could. The man soonbecame hot and took off his cloak.

One day the staff members of a zoo called a meeting to discuss the problem--how to deal with the kangaroos that were found out of the cage. They came to the conclusion that the cage was placed too low and decided to raise it from one to two meters high.
But the next day the kangaroos were still at large and they again raised the cage to three meters.Quite beyond their expectation the next morning they saw the kangaroos still free to go about.
They were alarmed and determined to go to all the length by raising the cage to the height of ten meters.Later a giraffe, while chatting with some kangaroos, asked them, “Do you think they will go on raising your cage?”
“Hard to say,” said a kangaroo, “if they continue forgetting to fasten the cage door.”
