Chinese Food Chinese are famous for their cuisine. Chinese are the ultimate gourmet. Especially in south China, they would say they'd eat everything th at has four legs besides the dinner table, ever ything that has two wings besides a plane. M any of the dishes served in China may really s urprise newcomers. And many of these dishe s are so called medicinal dishes believed to h ave extraordinary nutritional value, including Shark Fin, Swallow Nest.

Snake soup is among the most treasured sou ps in China. Then there are also snake gall an d blood mixed in liquor which supposedly will brighten your eyes. Some "westernized" Chin ese would suggest that if Adam and Eve had been Chinese we humans would still be in the Garden of Eden as they would have eaten the snake.

Chopsticks are the main table utensils in Chin a. Chinese children starts with a spoon but wi ll adapt to chopsticks as early as when he jus t turns one. As a gift chopsticks symbolize str aightforwardness, because of its shape. Chin ese chopsticks don't have pointed tip, unlike t he Japanese style that is refined to pick out t he bones for their main diet, fish. Chinese cho psticks are mostly of bamboo, but today there are more and more wooden ones and plastic ones.

Foreigners are not expected to use chopstick s proficiently, but if they do, they will give a mi ghty impression. Therefore before you go to C hina, go to the local Chinese restaurant, if not to find authentic Chinese food, at least you ca n practi ce the use of chopsticks. If in your fir st meal in China you don't have to use chopst icks, then if you still can't handle the two stick s to pick up a big shrimp in your tenth meal, y ou show your incompetence in learning and t he willingness to learn.

Hi, my name is ???. As a secretary in the FDA, I would like to tell you something about food safety in the United States in both Federal-level and State-level.

Food safety is a scientific discipline describing handling, preparation, and storage of food in ways that prevent foodborne illness. This includes a number of routines that should be followed to avoid potentially severe health hazards. Food can transmit disease from person to person as well as serve as a growth medium for bacteria that can cause food poisoning. Debates on genetic food safety include such issues as impact of genetically modified food on health of further generations and genetic pollution of environment, which can destroy natural biological diversity. In developed countries there are intricate standards for food preparation, whereas in lesser developed countries the main issue is simply the availability of adequate safe water, which is usually a critical item.

Federal-level regulation
The Food and Drug Administration publishes the Food Code, a model set of guidelines and proceres that assists food control jurisdictions by providing a scientifically sound technical and legal basis for regulating the retail and food service instries, including restaurants, grocery stores and institutional foodservice providers such as nursing homes. Regulatory agencies at all levels of government in the United States use the FDA Food Code to develop or update food safety rules in their jurisdictions that are consistent with national food regulatory policy. According to the FDA, 48 of 56 states and territories, representing 79% of the U.S. population, have adopted food codes patterned after one of the five versions of the Food Code, beginning with the 1993 edition.

《Chinese Cuisine Food Culture》
As a country that pays great attention to courtesy, our cuisine culture is deep rooted in China''s history. As a visitor or guest in either a Chinese home or restaurant you will find that table manners are essential and the distinctive courtesies displayed will invariably add to the enjoyment of your meals and keep you in high spirits!
Respect First

It is really an admirable custom to respect others at the table, including the aged, teachers and guests while taking good care of children.

Chinese people stress filial piety all the time. The practice of presenting the best or fine food first to the senior members of the family has been observed for countless generations. In ancient times the common people led a needy life but they still tried their best to support the elder mother or father who took it for granted.

Although the hosts in China are all friendly and hospitable, you should also show them respect. Before starting to eat dinner, the host may offer some words of greeting. Guests should not start to eat until the host says, ''Please enjoy yourself'' or something like that, otherwise it suggests disrespect and causes displeasure.

American Food

"You are what you eat."Nutrition experts often use this saying to promote better eating habits. What we put in our mouths does become a part of us.But we can look at this statement another way. What we eat reflects who we are--as people and as a culture.Do you want to understand another culture? Then you ought to find out about its food.Learning about American food can give us a real taste of American culture.

What is "American food"?At first you might think the answer is easy as pie.To many people,American food means hamburgers, hot dogs, fried chicken and pizza. If you have a "sweet tooth,"you might even think of apple pie or chocolate chip cookies. It's true that Americans do eat those things. But are those the only kind of vittles you can find in America?

Except for Thanksgiving turkey,it's hard to find a typically "American"food. The United States is a land of immigrants. So Americans eat food from many different countries. When people move to America, they bring their cooking styles with them. That's why you can find almost every kind of ethnic food in America. In some cases,Americans have adopted foods from other countries as favorites.Americans love Italian pizza,Mexican tacos and Chinese egg rolls. But the American version doesn't taste quite like the original!

As with any large country, the U.S.A has several distinct regions. Each region boasts its own special style of food.Visit the South and enjoy country-style cooking.Journey through Louisiana for some spicy Cajun cuisine.Take a trip to New England and sample savory seafood dishes.Travel through the Midwest,"the breadbasket of the nation,"for delicious baked goods.Cruise over to the Southwest and try some tasty Tex-Mex treats.Finish your food tour in the Pacific Northwest with some gourmet coffee.

Americans living at a fast pace often just "grab a quick bite."Fast food restaurants offer people on the run everything from fried chicken to fried rice.Microwave dinners and instant foods make cooking at home a snap.Of course, one of the most common quick American meals is a sandwich. If it can fit between two slices of bread,Americans probably make a sandwich out of it.Peanut butter and jelly is an all-time American favorite.

Americans on the go also tend to eat a lot of "junk food."Potato chips, candy bars, soft drinks and other goodies are popular treats. Many people eat too many of these unhealthy snacks. But others opt for more healthy eating habits. Some even go "all natural."They refuse to eat any food prepared with chemicals or additives.

Dear friends,
As we all know, we are what we eat. Therefore, it』s very important for us to form healthy eating habits. However, bad eating habits are still very common among us students. Some of us often go to school without breakfast; some like to have snacks; some others are particular about food; and still some eat or drink too much. All these bad habits will surely do harm to our health.
To keep fit, we should have various healthy diets, which generally include proper amounts of fish, meat, vegetables, fruit as well as main food. Besides, we』d better have meals regularly.
In my opinion, we should try to develop healthy eating habits to build up a strong body. Only in this way can we have enough energy to study better.
That』s all. Thank you!

Chinese mplings and culture

Chinese mplings or Jiaozi, with meat and vegetable fillings,is a traditional Chinese Food, which is essential ring holidays in Northern China.Chinese are Masters in the Art of Making Dumplings.

History
The history of jiaozi dates back to ancient times, some 500-600 years ago.As the Spring Festival marks the start of a new year, people choose to eat jiaozi to connote their wishes for good fortune in the new year.China has been perfecting the art of mpling making since the Sung dynasty.
Chinese mpling is one of the most important foods in Chinese New Year.Since the shape of Chinese mplings is similar to ancient Chinese gold or silver ingots, they symbolize wealth.Traditionally, the members of a family get together to make mplings ring the New Year's Eve.They may hide some coins in one of the mplings. The person who fined the coin will likely have a good fortune in the New Year.Chinese mpling is also popular in other Chinese holidays or festivals,so it is part of the Chinese culture or tradition.

Compostions of Dumplings
There is no set rule as to what makes mpling fillings. They can be anything from vegetables, meat to seafood.Whatever the fillings, the wrapping skill needs to be exquisite to make jiaozi look attractive.
Chinese mplings may be round or crescent-shaped,boiled or pan-fried.The filling may be sweet or savory; vegetarian or filled with meat and vegetables.Of course, all this variety can be confusing.

How to make Chinese mplings?
As China is a country with a vast territory, there are great difference in various regions in ways of making jiaozi.
First of all, chop the meat into pieces and mash them, then add salt, sesame oil,soy sauce, ginger, scallions,Chinese cabbage and MSG if you like.Mix thoroughly the ingredients; add two spoonful of water if necessary.
In a big bowl, add water to flour graally.Mix and knead by hand to form soft dough, then cover it with towel and put it aside for about an hour. Then scatter some dry flour on the board, knead and roll it into a sausage---like dough about 5 centimeters in diameter, then chop it into small pieces.Press each piece with your hand and get a pancake. Finally,to hold the pancake with your palm and put the filling in the center and wrap into half-moon shaped and seal the edges.
The next step is easy.Put the mpling into boiling water, when it is well cooked,it is ready to be served. Before eating, you need to prepare some small dishes to contain the mixture of soy sauce, vinegar, and sesame oil or pepper oil [to your own taste.

Ways of serving
Ways of serving Chinese mplings also vary from place to place.Generally,Chinese mplings are boiled in clear water and served dry with vinegar, soy sauce, garlic or pepper oil if one likes them hot.In some parts of the Northeast China, however, mplings are boiled in broth together with vermicelli made from bean starch, and served together.

Culture Meaings
Making mplings is really a team work.Usually family members will join the work. Most Chinese start to make mplings when they were kids.
Chinese mpling is often the food for sending off friends or family members away. People in some places think that it is good fortune for the traveling ones to eat mplings and wish them a safe journey.

It's most people's biggest health fear. But whether you get dementia, scientists now believe, is mostly a matter of lifestyle; it hinges on what you eat every single day. Here's a guide to making the choices that will preserve a healthy mind—starting right now! When it comes to aging, life can be cruel. There's plenty to...well...let's come right out and say it: think about. What will happen to my looks? What will happen to my body? Will I still be able to pursue my interests? What will happen to my mind? That last question is now the second leading health concern (after cancer) among alts in at least four Western countries—France, Germany, and Spain, as well as the United States—according to a recent survey by the Harvard University School of Public Health and the Alzheimer Europe consortium. Fear of developing dementia would likely stir even more concern if Americans didn't mistakenly believe a cure for Alzheimer's disease exists (more than 45 percent of U.S. respondents think there is an effective treatment). Despite the lack of a cure, great progress has been made in the past three decades in understanding the disease. The most common cause of dementia, or severe cognitive decline, and the sixth leading cause of death in the U. S.,Alzheimer's disease is marked by difficulty storing new memories and recalling recent events, loss of ability to track day-to-day information, a disrupted sense of time and space, social withdrawal, irritability, and mood swings. The neurodegenerative condition typically manifests after age 60. Life expectancy in the U.S. is currently about 78 years and rising. The 5.4 million Americans who suffer from the illness include 13 percent of those over age 65. Scientists attribute the debilitating disorder to the graal accumulation between brain cells of a toxic protein,beta-amyloid, that blocks the transmission of information from cell to cell, wipes out synapses, and disrupts basic neuron function, leading to cell death. Inflammatory processes are also involved in memory loss. The vast majority of Alzheimer's cases—over 99 percent—occur spontaneously; they are not linked to genetic factors. But they are linked to obesity. Researchers find that the same lifestyle choices that lead people to become obese or develop heart disease also increase the risk of developing dementia. It comes down to this: Choices we make throughout life about what we put in our bodies may protect against Alzheimer's, or delay its onset. At the very least, says neuroscientist Gary Wenk, "We can slow down the time that it takes for someone to get symptoms." Professor of psychology, neuroscience, and molecular virology, immunology, and medical genetics at The Ohio State University, Wenk is author of the book Your Brain on Food.
Heading off dementia, he insists, starts with what we eat. Food should be thought of the same way as the drugs we put in our body. They're all made up of chemicals. Everything we consume prompts a reaction in the brain. Picking the right foods can minimize damage to neurons and preserve a healthy mind as you age.
