有一個楚國人出門遠行。他在乘船過江的時候，一不小心，把隨身帶著的劍落到江中的急流里去了。船上的人都大叫：「劍掉進水裡了！」
這個楚國人馬上用一把小刀在船舷上刻了個記號，然後回頭對大家說：「這是我的劍掉下去的地方。」
眾人疑惑不解地望著那個刀刻的印記。有人催促他說：「快下水去找劍呀！」
楚國人說：「慌什麼，我有記號呢。」
船繼續前行，又有人催他說：「再不下去找劍，這船越走越遠，當心找不回來了。」
楚國人依舊自信地說：「不用急，不用急，記號刻在那兒呢。」
直至船行到岸邊停下後，這個楚國人才順著他刻有記號的地方下水去找劍。可是，他怎麼能找得到呢。船上刻的那個記號是表示這個楚國人的劍落水瞬間在江水中所處的位置。掉進江里的劍是不會隨著船行走的，而船和船舷上的記號卻在不停地前進。等到船行至岸邊，船舷上的記號與水中劍的位置早已風馬牛不相及了。這個楚國人用上述辦法去找他的劍，不是太糊塗了嗎？
他在岸邊船下的水中，白費了好大一陣工夫，結果毫無所獲，還招來了眾人的譏笑。
這則寓言告訴我們，用靜止的眼光去看待不斷發展變化的事物，必然要犯脫離實際的主觀唯心主義錯誤。
