上陽宮是唐朝皇帝建在洛陽的一個行宮，開元天寶年間，宮女數量激增，很多美女被安置到各個行宮，作為嬪妃儲備基地，上陽宮即為其中之一。但是由於楊貴妃的專寵，她們的結局其實已經註定，那就是一輩子都沒有機會見皇帝，在日復一日的期盼中老死行宮，這也就是《上陽宮望幸》題目的意思。除了劉長卿，杜甫、元稹、白居易等人都寫過上陽宮人為題材的詩歌，傷感這些女子的遭遇，後來很多人還上書請求皇帝釋放超齡宮女出宮。
言歸正題：玉輦西巡久未還，春光猶入上陽間：
皇帝巡幸西方，久久不回，上陽宮還是年年迎來春光。（西巡是唐代文人對唐玄宗在安史之亂時逃出長安避難入蜀客氣的說法，唐玄宗的逃跑意味著他政治生命的告終，這些為他准備的美女結局可知。但是對於宮女們來說，皇帝一天沒有駕崩，似乎還有渺茫的希望。）
萬木長承新雨露，千門空對舊河山。
