作者盧迪亞?吉卜林（Rudyard Kipling, 1865—1936），英國著名作家，19世紀90年代在英國幾乎是家喻戶曉。1907年獲諾貝爾文學獎。《如果》是他當時寫給他兒子的一首詩，是其膾炙人口的代表作。這首詩歷來倍受推崇。吉卜林本人說 「如果你在每天清晨讀一遍這首詩，你將成為高尚的人; 如果你在每晚讀一遍這首詩，你將成為聖潔的人。」

狄金森的詩歌主要有三個主題: 自然、愛情、死亡。其中三分之一強的詩歌是死亡主題。狄金森用極其豐富的想像和深刻的思想對死亡這一主題進行了思考和探索,刻畫出不同的死亡意象, 向世人展示了一個神秘而又豐富的內心世界。但是詩人沒有停留在死亡的瞬間及對死亡的恐懼和無奈的層面上, 而是通過深入的思考和質疑,找出了對生命思考的新視角, 進而揭示出生命的真諦。在詩人心中,如果死亡不是人生的一個終結,至少是一個重要階段,對死亡的思考也就成了詩人的人生的重要組成部分。通過對這些詩歌的分析,我們可以看到詩人的獨特視角、對宗教的信仰和懷疑的不置可否的心理、對上帝的愛
