【原文】
齊宣王使人吹竽①，必三百人。南郭處士②請為王吹竽。宣王悅之，廩③食以數百人。宣王死，閔王立。好一一聽之，處士逃。
【注釋】
①竽：一種樂器的名稱，很象現在的笙。
②處士：沒有官職的普通知識分子。
③廩：糧食倉庫。
【譯文】
齊宣王讓人吹竽，一定要三百人一起吹。南郭處士請求為齊宣王吹竽，宣王很高興。官倉供養的樂手有好幾百人。齊宣王死後，他的兒子王繼位。王也喜歡聽吹竽，但他喜歡讓他們一個一個地吹，南郭處士只好逃走了。
【作者簡介】
韓非（約前280-前233），是韓國的貴族，「喜刑名法術之學」，後世稱他為韓非子。他和李斯都是荀子的弟子。當時韓國很弱，常受鄰國的欺凌，他多次向韓王提出富強的計策，但未被韓王採納。韓非寫了《孤憤》《五蠹》等一系列文章，這些作品後來集為《韓非子》一書。秦王嬴政讀了韓非的文章，極為贊賞。公元前234年，韓非作為韓國的使臣來到秦國，上書秦王，勸其先伐趙而緩伐韓。李斯妒忌韓非的才能，與姚賈一道進讒加以陷害，韓非被迫服毒自殺。
韓非注意研究歷史，認為歷史是不斷發展進步的。他認為如果當今之世還贊美「堯、舜、湯、武之道」「必為新聖笑矣」。因此他主張「不期修古，不法常可」「世異則事異」「事異則備變」（《韓非子 ž 五蠹》），要根據今天的實際來制定政策。他的歷史觀，為當時地主階級的改革提供了理論根據。
韓非繼承和總結了戰國時期法家的思想和實踐，提出了君主專制中央集權的理論。他主張「事在四方，要在中央；聖人執要，四方來效」（《韓非子 ž 物權》），國家的大權，要集中在君主（「聖人」）一人手裡，君主必須有權有勢，才能治理天下，「萬乘之主，千乘之君，所以制天下而征諸侯者，以其威勢也」（《韓非子 ž 人主》）。為此，君主應該使用各種手段清除世襲的奴隸主貴族，「散其黨」「奪其輔」（《韓非子 ž 主道》）；同時，選拔一批經過實踐鍛煉的封建官吏來取代他們，「宰相必起於州部，猛將必發於卒伍」（《韓非子 ž 顯學》）。韓非還主張改革和實行法治，要求「廢先王之教」（《韓非子 ž 問田》），「以法為教」（《韓非子 ž 五蠹》）。他強調制定了「法」，就要嚴格執行，任何人也不能例外，做到「法不阿貴」「刑過不避大臣，賞善不遺匹夫」（《韓非子 ž 有度》）。他還認為只有實行嚴刑重罰，人民才會順從，社會才能安定，封建統治才能鞏固。韓非的這些主張，反映了新興封建地主階級的利益和要求，為結束諸侯割據，建立統一的中央集權的封建國家，提供了理論依據。秦始皇統一中國後採取的許多政治措施，就是韓非理論的應用和發展。
【評點】
不會吹竽的南郭先生混在三百人的樂隊中裝模作樣地湊數，竟然可以得到賞賜，一旦要自己憑真實本領單獨演奏時，南郭先生就只好逃之夭夭了。這個寓言比喻沒有真才實學的人混在行家裡面充數，或是用不好的東西混在好東西里充數。南郭先生也成了濫竽充數者的代名詞。
千百年來，濫竽充數這個故事，一直被人們廣為傳誦。南郭處士的行為騙得了一時，卻騙不了一世。強調個人應該勤學苦練，使自己具有真才實學。

Prince: Help, help.
Jack: The voice came from the clouds, how strange! I must go and see what』s going on up there. (He climbed up. Then he saw the prince was stocked in a castle.)
Jack: Hi, what happen to you? How can I help you?
Prince: It』s a long stories, I』ll tell you only if you take one of my leg hair.
(Jack took the prince』s leg hair, and the prince became as small as normal people. The prince opened the door, and welcomed Jack in.)
Prince: Thank you a million for saving my life. How can I ever repay you?
Jack: That』s no big deal. So what』s your story?
Prince: Once open a time, there』s a greedy witch who would even destroy the world only to get my hen and harp.
Jack: Your hen and harp? I don』t see they worth it.
Prince: You don』t understand, the hen can proce many golden eggs, and the harp is made of gold it can sing beautiful melodies. One day, the witch turned me to a giant and flew away with my hen and harp.
Jack: What are you going to do now?
Prince: Of course I』m going to pay my revenge. Are you going to come with me?

旁白：老虎想這倒也是個辦法，於是就讓狐狸在前面帶路，自己跟著，一道向森林深處走去。
旁白：花鹿、小猴等各種動物遠遠地看見老虎來了，一個個都嚇得魂飛魄散，紛紛逃命。

旁白： 孔老夫子常說「知之為知之，不知為不知，是知也」，也就是說要謙虛實在，不能不懂裝懂。孔子還說過，看一個人要「聽其言、觀其行」，也就是說，從這個人所作所為去判斷一個人，是否言行一致。那麼孔子是不是「知之為知之，不知為不知」的人呢？剛好，下面這一幕會解除我們的疑問。
甲乙：（兩小兒正在爭論）「我對！」「我才對！」
孔子：（孔子到東方游歷，碰巧經過這，便上前去問。）你們在爭論什麼呀？
甲乙：我們在爭辯太陽中午離我們近還是早晨離我們近。
甲： 我認為太陽出來時距離人近，而正午時距離人遠。
乙： 太陽剛出來時離人遠，而正午時離人近。
甲乙：您，您是名聞天下的孔老先生，您的知識比我們多，您來評一評，我們倆到底是誰說的對呢！
孔子：哦，那你們各有什麼理由呢？
甲： 您想，早晨的太陽大的像車上的篷蓋一樣，等到正午時就像個盤孟，這不是遠處的小而近處的大嗎？
乙： 可是，太陽剛出來時清清涼涼，等到正午時就熱得像把手伸進熱水裡一樣，這不是近的時候熱而遠的時候涼嗎？
孔子：這，這?兩位小學士，老朽實不相瞞，我也不能斷定你倆到底是誰說的對，誰說的錯。老朽無知，甘拜兩位為師。
甲乙：（笑）誰說您的知識淵博呢？
孔子：（施禮，並不好意思笑了笑）

楚王 （陰險地）哈哈哈！我們國勢強盛，等會兒乘機侮辱晏子，顯顯我們楚國的威風。晏子身材矮小，你去在城門旁邊開一個五尺來高的洞。
接待人員 是！
[晏子來到楚國。
楚王 （急忙吩咐道）把城門關上，讓晏子從這個洞進去。
接待人員 （急忙把城門關上，指著洞）晏子，從這邊進。
晏子 （看了看，嚴肅地）這是個狗洞，不是城門。只有訪問「狗國」，才從狗洞進去。我在這兒等一會兒，你們先去問個明白，楚國到底是個什麼樣的國家？
接待的人 （匆匆跑到皇宮里）報告大王！晏子說：「這是個狗洞，不是城門。只有訪問「狗國」，才從狗洞進去。」他的意思就是：「不開城門，這就是狗國，不是狗國，就得開城門！」
楚王 （無可奈何地）大開城門，迎接晏子！
[過了一會兒，晏子隨著接待的人走進皇宮，見了楚王。
晏子 （雙手抱拳）大王好！
楚王 （端坐在寶座上，手裡拿著扇子，瞅了晏子一眼，冷笑一聲）難道齊國沒有人了嗎？
晏子 （臉色嚴肅）這是什麼話？我國首都臨淄住滿了人。大夥兒把袖子舉起來，就是一片雲；大夥兒甩一把汗，就是一陣雨；街上的行人肩膀擦著肩膀，腳尖碰著腳跟。大王怎麼說齊國沒有人呢？
楚王 （猛地把扇子敲在桌上，指著晏子）哼，既然有這么多人，為什麼打發你來呢？
晏子 （低著頭，兩手一握）您這一問，我實在不好回答。撒個謊吧，怕犯了欺騙大王的罪；說實話吧，又怕大王生氣。
楚王 （低頭看了看晏子，搖搖頭）實話實說，我不生氣。
晏子 （笑了，拱了拱手）敝國有一個規矩：訪問上等的國家，就派上等人去；訪問下等的國家，就派下等人去。我最不中用，所以派到這兒來了。
楚王 （面容僵硬）呵呵呵。
［楚王安排酒席招待晏子。正當他們吃得高興的時候，有兩個武士押著一個囚犯，從堂下走過。
武士甲 （厲聲）快走快走！
武士乙 （板著臉）要不是因為要侮辱晏子，宮廷里根本容不得你出現！
楚王 （瞧了他們一眼）那個囚犯犯的什麼罪？他是哪裡人？
武士甲、武士乙 （齊聲）犯了盜竊罪，是齊國人。他剛在別人家裡偷錢，被我們抓著了。

武士甲、武士乙、接待人員 （得意揚揚）哈哈哈！這下晏子你丟盡臉了吧？
晏子 （面不改色，站起來）大王怎麼不知道哇？淮南的柑橘，又大又甜。可是橘樹一種到淮北，就只能結又苦又小的枳，還不是因為水土不同嗎？同樣的道理，齊國人在齊國能安居樂業，好好地勞動，一到楚國，就做起盜賊來了，也許是兩國的水土不同吧。
楚王 （只好賠不是）我原來想取笑大夫，沒想到反讓大夫取笑了。
